Fire Safety
- Install a smoke detector on every level of your home.
- Teach children to get out quickly and to stay out in case of fire.
- Replace worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately.
- Never overload electrical extension cords.
- Use electrical products that meet the UL standard for safety.
- Check electrical tools regularly for signs of wear.
- Keep grills away from anything that can burn, such as your house, car or dry vegetation.
- For charcoal grills, only use lighter fluid designed for grills; never use gasoline.

- Check gas grill connections between the propane tank and the fuel line for blockages.
- Do not overfill the propane tank on your gas grill.
- Test you smoke detectors monthly.
- Do not wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue.
- Replace smoke detector batteries at least twice a year.
- Practice a home escape plan with your family.
- Never open doors that are hot to the touch.
- Teach children not to hide from firefighters.
- Keep matches and lighters in a secured drawer or cabinet.
- Demonstrate to children how to stop, drop to the ground and roll if their clothes catch fire.
- Teach children the nature of fire: hot, fast, dark and deadly!
