Fire Safety

  • Install a smoke detector on every level of your home.
  • Teach children to get out quickly and to stay out in case of fire.
  • Replace worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately.
  • Never overload electrical extension cords.
  • Use electrical products that meet the UL standard for safety.
  • Check electrical tools regularly for signs of wear.
  • Keep grills away from anything that can burn, such as your house, car or dry vegetation.
  • For charcoal grills, only use lighter fluid designed for grills; never use gasoline.
  • Do not add lighter fluid to an already lit charcoal grill; flames can flashback up into the container.
  • Check gas grill connections between the propane tank and the fuel line for blockages.
  • Do not overfill the propane tank on your gas grill.
  • Test you smoke detectors monthly.
  • Do not wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue.
  • Replace smoke detector batteries at least twice a year.
  • Practice a home escape plan with your family.
  • Never open doors that are hot to the touch.
  • Teach children not to hide from firefighters.
  • Keep matches and lighters in a secured drawer or cabinet.
  • Demonstrate to children how to stop, drop to the ground and roll if their clothes catch fire.
  • Teach children the nature of fire: hot, fast, dark and deadly!
